Chapter 20

Natalie settles onto her plush sofa in the loft with Bones. He plops his head into her lap, looks up at her, and whines.

“I know, little buddy! Same.” Her phone buzzes again and even before she looks at it, she knows it’s one of the four women who’ve been trying since she left with Bones without finishing dinner.

Her three besties, Megan, Wynn, and Whitney, or her mom. Neither of which she wants to talk to at the moment.

She tries watching her favorite series, but the soft pitiful whimpering coming from the head in her lap won’t let her rest. Finally, she gets up, “Okay, Bones, let’s go back.”

The drive back to her parents is grueling. First, she knew she shouldn’t have taken him in the first place, but she also gave her credit because she wasn’t really in a rational mindset at the time. Second, she was returning him, so maybe they wouldn’t fire her for being so childish. If she still has a job, hopefully her irrationality will wane by morning when she has to return to the construction trailer with Mara, her assistant.

Natalie looks over at Bones with his head down on the front seat. Even though defeat rips through her, love for Bones prevails.

Luckily, the only light on was a dim light from the back of the house when she opens the front door and led Bones inside. She hadn’t dared to look at the guest house when she drove by, for fear she’d find Josh sitting on the front steps himself.

Natalie bent down and kissed Bones on the forehead. “I love you, buddy. Sorry.”

“I knew you’d bring him back,” her mother’s voice floated from the large formal living room area just off the foyer. “You always have had trouble holding back your emotions.”

Natalie takes a step in her direction. “No, Mom, this time I actually did hold them back. For as long as I could, anyway. I think it would be good for you to let some of yours out sometimes.”

“Come sit,” her mom says, patting the space beside her on the sofa.

Natalie plops down and her mom wraps an arm around her. “I’m serious, Mom. You seem too controlled all the time. You don’t have to do that, you know.”

“Yes, I know.” Her mom chuckles. “I didn’t always. The first time I met your father was at a big party right here in this room. It was his welcoming to the company party. Formal one, I might add. Everyone in tuxedos and flowing dresses. It was the eighties, here in the South, so fancy parties like that weren’t unusual. Your dad, however, showed up with scruff on his face like he hadn’t shaved in two days, wearing jeans and a blazer. He asked me to dance in front of everyone, including my father. Right there.” Her mom points to the center of the large room. “I tried to say no, but he’d basically asked if I was setting out to offend him at his own party.
